The Day Care is located in one of Port Elizabeth’s most impoverished areas – the Walmer location. The Unathi Day Care Centre has three caretakers who look after the children while their parents or guardians are at work.

The students took on various initiatives to uplift the home such as:

  • Restoring the interior and exterior of the home
  • Sourcing furniture for the home and;
  • Sourcing more educational material for the children to use

In order to succeed with their initiatives they approached local businesses that specialise in furniture and hardware as sponsors. Jack’s Hardware sponsored the paint and materials to help the students fix the interior and exterior as well as fixing the windows and window frames. The fittings, ironware and other supplies were provided by W&B Hardware. The group also managed to source tables and chairs as well as flooring materials to fix some of the rooms; this was done through from Eclipse, a furniture and hardware store.

Through their efforts the group was able to establish new relationships between the Centre and members of the community who will be able to help sustain their facilities in the future.
